Antonio Machado called him the "angel of true poetry," and Dámaso Alonso described him as "a great poet with a unique voice," stating that with his work, "modern Spanish poetry is inaugurated." Pablo Neruda, on his part, writes the following verses about him: "Sweet great voice, sad heart!... Sun of misery, master of rain!"

Son of the Andalusian land, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer lived a hard life, full of hardships, a life that shaped his character, endowing him with the sensitivity and spirituality that his verses exude.

The harsh reality of his life often leads him to seek refuge in the world of imagination and dreams, a world constantly nourished by the living force of love. Love as a foundation, both of human relationships (idealization of women) and the relationship with the Divine (idealization of God).
