The aim of this book is to shed light on a dark and carefully hidden area of modern Greek history, during the period of the third occupation government with Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense I. Rallis (1943-1944).
During this period, the occupation Civil War unfolded—alongside the anti-occupation war—as a prelude to another Civil War, which soon followed (the December events of 1944 and the period of 1946-1949). It is the time when the undisputed national-resistance action of the EAM-ELAS was combined with tendencies of military hegemony.
At the same time, it is the era when the anti-communist passion of some (self-proclaimed "nationalists") led them to the point of not hesitating to cooperate with the occupiers or to enlist in anti-communist units (Security Battalions, terrorist groups of Special Security, etc.) that the latter armed for their own benefit.
The book has been composed from the synthesis of numerous archival documents excavated from the obscurity of the Military Archives Service (ΜΑS), as well as other archives (General Staff/DIΣ, A.S.K.I, E.L.I.A, Historical Archives of the Benaki Museum, GAK), combined with other unpublished or published written sources.
These elements must be supplemented with the memories gathered by the author over the last thirty years, discussing with dozens of people (civilians and former officers) who lived through the years of Occupation. Based on this material, an investigation is made into the almost unknown world of the Security Battalions, and a clear picture emerges regarding the "quality" of the personnel that composed them.
