This book is the Greek edition of one of the world's leading introductory microbiology textbooks, the science that studies the world of microorganisms and is one of the key pillars of modern biology.
The central theme of the book is the understanding of the basic biology of microorganisms, that is, the fundamental molecular mechanisms that govern their structure, function, and integration into their environment.
It also presents some applications of considerable social and economic importance in medicine, industry, agriculture, and biotechnology, which have their roots in the fundamental study of microorganisms.
The first edition of the book was presented in 1970 by Thomas Brock. This prominent microbiologist is honored by the title of the later editions of the book, which continue from his successors.
Recent editions, such as the 10th on which the Greek translation is based, have aimed to preserve the core body of "classical" microbiological science. At the same time, however, they have incorporated several of the groundbreaking scientific developments of recent years, such as the essential understanding of microbial life at a chemical level, the analysis of the complete genetic "recipe" of microorganisms (genomic analysis), a better understanding of the evolutionary relationships among organisms, modern virology, and the revolutionary possibilities offered by the use of single-celled organisms as biotechnological micro-factories.
