Since the mid-1980s, as part of the broader educational reform efforts in our country, institutional improvements have been made in the teaching of foreign languages.
The teaching of the English language is promoted in elementary school, and a second foreign language is introduced in secondary education. The aim of this book is to provide a historical overview of the teaching of the English language in public education from 1960 to the present day.
The approaches to the English language are, on one hand, the institutional framework (legislation), curricula, and timetables, and on the other hand, the prevailing methodological trends in its teaching.
Additionally, there is an effort to examine the teaching of English synchronically, focusing our interest on primary education. Empirical research is conducted through which an attempt is made to outline the current state of its teaching from the perspective of educators and to capture their attitudes towards issues of teaching methodology.
The findings of the research can serve as a stimulus for reflection, both for prospective and currently active educators, regarding their teaching work.
