Power Electronics have become one of the key areas in the field of Electrical Engineering. They are directly related to the control of electric motors, motion systems, and generally to the control, conversion, management, and quality of supplied electrical power.
This book aims to cover the laboratory component of the course. It includes a series of appropriately selected representative laboratory exercises on the main types of converters (DC/DC, AC/DC, AC/AC, DC/AC, etc.), with the goal of understanding their operation, the way they are constructed, and generally investigating their impact on the network and the load.
The introduction of the book presents the basic switching elements, analyzes their general characteristics, performance, and applications. Various types of power converters are presented and analyzed, emphasizing their application fields.
Each exercise (out of the 19 selected) is accompanied by a theoretical component, which provides a thorough analysis of the operation of the setup it refers to, along with proof of the fundamental operational relationships and waveforms for various operating scenarios.
Specifically, the first three exercises focus on the basic characteristics of thyristors and on their gate triggering circuit. Exercises 4 to 8 pertain to all types of uncontrolled rectifier circuits for various loading conditions. Exercises 9 to 15 concern controlled (and semi-controlled) rectifier circuits for different loading conditions. Exercises 16 and 17 refer to single-phase and three-phase DC/DC converters (fixed frequency). Exercise 18 addresses the step-down voltage converters, and finally, exercise 19 relates to voltage source inverters.
In the appendices, various useful definitions of power, different coefficients (distortion, ripple, etc.), and other characteristic quantities are provided, along with the methodology for analyzing periodic signals using Fourier methods, as well as the methodology for studying and designing the ignition circuit of a controlled single-phase half-wave rectifier.
We hope that this book will serve as a substantial aid for the student and undergraduate, as well as for the practicing engineer.
