“The Book of Music Reading” promotes, from a modern pedagogical perspective, the holistic teaching of solfège. The main goal of the book is that the teaching of solfège should be enjoyable and connected to the “real” world of music.
Therefore, from the first to the last exercise, phrasing and dynamics are used to create small and self-contained melodies, while examples from classical, Greek traditional, as well as jazz and ethnic music are integrated alongside the exercises.
The material spans four volumes of graded difficulty that correspond to the eight levels of the English system, but it also introduces some significant innovations.
From the first volume:
- modal and pentatonic scales are used
- the keys of G, F, and C are introduced
- mixed rhythms from Greek traditional music are incorporated
- the concept of tetrachords is reinforced
- scales with sharps and flats are alternated
- rhythmic syllables are used to establish a solid sense of rhythm.
