In the first of the eight volumes of the Histories, Thucydides briefly presents what preceded the great war, his methodology, the causes and pretexts of the war, the events after the Persian wars that led to the evolution of the Athenian Alliance into Athenian Hegemony (Empire), as well as all the diplomatic activities undertaken to avoid the destructive civil war.
