Description & Specifications

Despite the fact that the 1940s were pivotal for urban life and, correspondingly, the War and Occupation were violent experiences that severely affected European cities and their inhabitants, the "marriage" between urban studies and the social history of the Occupation has not been particularly successful, at least not to the extent that the rapid and multifaceted development of the scientific literature around both the War and the city would justify.

"Cities at War" comparatively examines the German occupation of European cities around the thematic axes of everyday life, economy, power, and resistance. The occupied urban space emerges here as a privileged observation point for all phenomena related to the Occupation at their highest intensity, from daily coexistence and institutional collaboration to armed violence and uprising.

Beyond a parallel geographical reading, cities are perceived as autonomous battlefields. As autonomous, multidimensional fields of accumulation of social, ideological, and class tensions which took on a massive and confrontational character and today constitute the reservoir of memory of a shared pan-European experience.
