Description

Description

This CVA fascicule includes seventy-eight Attic and five Atticizing amphorae dating from the Submycenaean period to the Late Geometric. They represent the vast majority of the Attic and Atticizing amphorae from this period preserved at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Amphorae from published excavations (e.g., the vases from Nea Ionia) and those included in a previous CVA volume (e.g., the monumental amphora with the belly inv. no. 804) have been systematically excluded from this volume. Emphasis has been placed on the unpublished Attic amphorae, and sixty-three vases are presented here for the first time. Most of the remaining twenty amphorae have been widely referenced in discussions about Attic Geometric painting as significant pieces for the development of the style. However, in practice, they are little known, and none has ever been published in full. Some are known from a brief mention or a poor photograph, sometimes limited to a simple detail of the vase, while others have been referenced as parallels in discussions of workshops and styles. Their full publication here for the first time is a long-overdue tribute to the reputation and influence of the Attic Geometric style.
