This book, which addresses male identities during adolescence, studies the formation of masculinity in Greek schools based on theoretical approaches from a feminist perspective and the logic of promoting gender equality in schools and society in general.
The general concern of the study is based on the viewpoint for the promotion of feminist inquiries and discussions - which is now prevalent internationally - that the path towards social change and the formation of equal gender relationships necessarily includes the promotion of a new understanding of masculinity, male identities, and male roles.
As emphasized in the pages of the book, “it is not possible for the lives of girls and women to change if the perceptions of men and boys regarding gender relationships do not change first.” Focusing our attention on teenage boys and attempting to identify and change the prevailing conditions in the school environment, we highlight our hope that the younger generation will have greater opportunities to critically confront the traditional, hegemonic, and often destructive masculinities and femininities that are beneficial, reproduce, and protect them within a social context that has been accused of doing so.
The volume is aimed at scholars from the fields of Psychology, Education, and Gender Studies, as well as undergraduate and graduate students and teachers. Its goal is to provide the latest discussions on the study of adolescent gender identities and the processes of their social construction, aspiring to contribute to a better understanding of contemporary gender relationships in the school context.
