John Makriyannis is a powerful national myth, and according to the poet George Seferis, a "great teacher of our language." His Memoirs captivated the aesthetics and political concerns of an entire generation.

In addition to this contribution, we owe him a series of 24 emblematic paintings, according to his own descriptions, that "narrate" episodes from the Revolution of 1821. These watercolors, which originally belonged to King Otto, were purchased by Ioannis Genadios in Rome in 1909 and vividly illustrate scenes from Makriyannis' Memoirs by the hands of Panagiotis and Dimitrios Zographos, two painters from Sparta.

In this edition, a product of the collaboration between the Genadios Library and Kapoun publishers, the reader will discover these historical documents along with texts analyzing the hero of the Greek Revolution, while also shedding light on another great figure, Ioannis Genadios, who took care to preserve the paintings.
