It is a bit difficult to open it with one hand, but that means that the child will also have difficulty. Personally, I have gotten used to it and manage, but my wife still struggles. It seems to be very well constructed, although we have only had it for 1 week, so I cannot comment on its durability over time. I have installed it without screws and it is very stable.
