For the ancient Greeks, Time was considered cyclical; consequently, History repeated itself, much like the Natural process (Otherwise, the writing of Thucydides' "History" as "a possession for all time" would not make sense).

Thus, Prophecy in ancient Greece (from Homer to the Roman Era) consisted of understanding the position of the present within the eternal cyclical wheel of Becoming. By recognizing where we are in the Circle, one could foresee the future. This was done in the Iliad by Hector when he "prophesied" unexpectedly the Destruction of Troy ("it will come to pass", Z 448), and the same was done by Aeschylus with his Prophecy regarding the Fall of Zeus ("The Prisoner" 907).

However, for the Bible, Time is Linear, and History follows a linear Course with a Beginning and an End. Particularly when Christians regarded the Resurrection of Christ as the Center - Purpose of History, the entire Period after the Resurrection was considered as the Last Days, where every event is a SIGN that announces the End, i.e., a Prophecy of the Final Event of the Eschaton.

In this sense, all transformative human History constitutes Prophecy with the final manifestation of the Last Days, the Appearance of the Antichrist. For Christians, Prophecy is not the Knowledge of the cyclical Wheel of Becoming, as it was for the Greeks, but the Knowledge of the SIGNS and the TIMES (Luke 12:56). In any case, both for the Greeks and in the Bible, the prophet is NOT a seer who predicts the future, but the VOICE of a God.
