The bibliography for a writer is not merely a list of articles and studies, and therefore it does not only concern those who wish to further explore their work. It is, additionally, a presentation of publications in such a way that the reader can understand what the author’s reception was while they were alive, how their work was received before and after their death, which works provoked reactions, how their actions and thoughts were evaluated, which books referring to them garnered wider interest, etc.
This bibliography covers publications that refer to Nikos Kazantzakis, but not the works of the author and thinker himself. It contains 6,350 entries and spans from 1906 to 2012. It includes all bibliographies published to date about the Cretan writer, the most significant of which are those by G. K. Katsimbalis and Peter Bien.
Both the curious philologist and scholar of Kazantzakis's work and the casual reader will find here articles, book and theater reviews, studies on the entire oeuvre and on individual texts, news about his life and death, poems inspired by him, dedications in magazines and newspapers, monographs on his philosophical and literary journey, mixed volumes with multifaceted analyses, laudatory and critical texts about his form.
The compilation of this bibliographic body was based— as far as possible— on research of all Greek-language criticism and bibliography and simultaneously extended to articles and volumes published in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Romanian, Serbo-Croatian, Hungarian, and Arabic.
