Harry Morgan is a tough man. He is courageous, self-sufficient, knows about alcohol and weapons, and believes, as he famously asserts, that "there is no law that says you must live hungry." A sailor with his own ship, Morgan is forced to support his family by smuggling illegal immigrants or criminals of all kinds across the borders, avoiding stray bullets from the Coast Guard and unexpected betrayals.
However, his journey seems predetermined, as in this world even the "tough guys" cannot survive unpunished. A novel that, although it has remained in the shadow of other, more famous works by the great Nobel laureate author, To Have and to Have Not contains moments of unique reading emotion and perhaps more than any other, illustrates Hemingway's worldview as well as his ability to create suspense for the fate of his characters.
