Timon squanders his wealth in order to create and maintain a network of power. When he finds himself broke and seeks loans, everyone turns their back on him, even those who have benefited from him.
He takes vengeance with one last banquet featuring a menu of excrement and withdraws into a literal and emotional desolation, from where, in a wild outburst of misanthropy, cynicism, and rage, he hurls curses and anathemas at morally bankrupt Athens, while seeming to know, to a painful degree, that part of the problem stems from his own internal emptiness.
The present edition includes the full text of the translation, without the cuts, condensations, explanations, adaptations, or additions deemed necessary for the smooth flow of the performance and the understanding of the dramatic dialogue.
