Inspector John Rebus returns to the Edinburgh Police, albeit with a lower rank than the one he retired with and slightly embittered.
A thirty-year-old case is reopened, and suspicions of mishandling fall on Rebus and his team from back then. Malcolm Fox is the officer leading this new investigation and the person who will find himself at the center of the conflict between the past and the present. Does Rebus have anything to hide? Is he a saint or a sinner?
THE INSPECTOR REBUS RETURNS, THE PRESS WROTE. Saint or Sinner? was published in the winter of 2014 and unfolds under the shadow of an open case from the 1980s, when police in the United Kingdom did not just enforce the law, but were "the law itself." This specific book has thus evolved into one of my favorites. Initially, because within its pages, John Rebus returns to active duty and the police force. The legendary figure who said goodbye to us in (bittersweet) 2007 through The Last Song remains equally belovedly cantankerous, making her absence even more noticeable all these years.
