The stories of Sevastopol are primarily autobiographical texts. The twenty-seven-year-old Tolstoy, who served as an officer in the besieged Sevastopol, records images from the battles, the trenches, and everyday life.
He vividly and realistically creates his characters, battle-hardened soldiers, young boys in uniform, old men, women, and children, who live closely with death and experience the pain of war with dignity. He dives deep into the human soul and sheds light, with a critical spirit but also with love, on the relationship of his characters with self-sacrifice, bravery, vanity, fear, arrogance, death, and defeat.
Sometimes he remains a detached observer, at other times he critiques with an imperceptible humor, and at times he cries out in pain in the face of devastation. In these chronicle-like stories that sweep us into the whirlpool of the Crimean War, Tolstoy recreates reality with admirable artistry and maturity, and sketches the early great anti-war scenes that we will see in full development in the masterful War and Peace.
