With these books, an authentic musical recording of an invaluable cultural heritage is attempted: that of Smyrnaean song. They contain songs from Smyrna, the Anatolian coast, Constantinople, as well as the refugee neighborhoods of Athens and Piraeus.
The eight volumes that will complete the series include 400 songs, left to us by anonymous and renowned composers of the last two centuries, songs that could be characterized as traditional, folk, rebetiko, estudiantinas, cantadas, manèles, light music, etc.
In addition to the sheet music in European notation, the chords and musical modes (makam) are also noted. For each song, there is as much detailed information as possible regarding its origin, poetic and musical variations found both in historical recordings and more recently.
The series is edited by George Konstantzos, from the Archive of Greek Music.
