Description

"Introduction to the Art of Cinema" is one of the most important and recognized introductory studies in the analysis of the cinematic medium, a teaching manual useful for university departments in the field.

The book examines the ways in which a film or documentary is created, operates, and is received, with the aim of raising awareness of analytical and interpretative skills and generally of the viewer's attention.

The authors analyze cinematic genres, production, narrative form, technique (mise-en-scène, editing, cinematography), and the style of the cinematic work, providing examples of cinematic criticism and evaluation, as well as a brief overview of the history of cinema.

They combine technical information with the necessary theories, referring to both the methods and creations of filmmakers of international production in the 20th century and the great theorists of the art of cinema.

Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, Spike Lee, Martin Scorsese, Dziga Vertov, and other directors provide examples of cinematic composition through their films, while movies such as "The Wizard of Oz" and "Citizen Kane" are examined in terms of the different ways of telling a story or the layers of meaning each film may contain.

How a film is made, how it functions as a whole, how we critically analyze it, and how the art of cinema changes over time are issues that introduce the reader to the aesthetics of cinema, encourage the student to research, and sharpen the perception of the casual viewer as well as the film enthusiast.

Because, as the authors say, "sitting in a dark cinema and watching an engaging film, we may have difficulty remembering that what we see is not a natural object, like a flower or an asteroid. Cinema captivates us to such an extent that we tend to forget that films are manufactured products. To understand the art of cinema, one must first recognize that a film is produced by both machines and human labor."
