The frieze of the Parthenon, unlike the sculptures of the pediments or the metopes, was located in a place that was difficult for the visitor to see and appreciate, let alone 'read' in its entirety.
The photographs in this book have been taken in situ, with the certainty that the construction of the frieze served a higher purpose than merely impressing mortals and certainly photographers, whom history would spawn many centuries later.
