In the troubled Balkans of the early 20th century, Macedonia is a battleground of intense social and national rivalries. The Ottoman Empire is collapsing, and the ethnic groups within it are either trying to gain autonomy or to integrate into the respective nation-states that are seeking to expand their territories.
For the first time, however, internationalist ideas are emerging that aim to shift the competition from the national level to the class level. The war is brutal, and in the capital of Macedonia, Thessaloniki, the presence of the Jewish community gave this battle distinct characteristics.
