The field that K. Kanelakis loved and served selflessly until his last breath was Cartography. He constructed remarkable maps of the island and diagrams of the Camp and the city of Chios, with accompanying tables and extensive memoranda, which provide an accurate depiction of the place in the late 19th-early 20th century. At the same time, he systematically dealt with the Topography of Chios, for the compilation of which he researched the entire island and prepared pioneering questionnaires, which he sent to people from every village whom he deemed suitable to respond. With the specialized knowledge he acquired, without considering time, expenses, and prohibitions of the Turkish government, "after so much persistence, he trod and excavated the formerly impassable cliffs and precipitous chasms of the mountains of Chios" and collected precise and detailed information (even noting tree fossils) and completed a manuscript map of the island in 1899, a true masterpiece. In 1903, he published the Topographic Chart of the island of Chios, large, accurate, and sufficient, which the place had been lacking until then. It was used by the Greek army in the liberation struggle of 1912 and served as the basis for all subsequent maps of the island. In the Diagrams of the city of Chios and the town of Camp, he meticulously designed all the topographic elements, and in the extensive memoranda accompanying them, he recorded valuable historical testimonies.
