K. Kanelakis was proud of his archaeological work, which established him in this field. During the Ottoman occupation, he maintained an antiquities shop and had an archaeological collection. As a "man with confessed experience in ancient things and proven zeal," he was unanimously deemed worthy, in 1886, for the position of curator of the Archaeological Museum of the En Chio Gymnasium, to which he excellently responded, enriching it with a large number of objects (about two hundred inscriptions and three thousand coins), which he recorded exemplary "so that no abuse would ever occur." Researchers who arrived in Chios sought him out, and many scientists published Chian inscriptions from his copies. In times when ignorance and lack of official protection were destroying monuments, he fought for their rescue and promotion. He located the archaeological sites of Chios and marked them on his Maps, designed monuments, and published the articles "On ancient tombs in Chios" (1896) and "On Chian autonomous coins" (1915). Various studies were found in his manuscripts (Description of the Fortresses, Towers, and Lighthouses in Chios, A few things about the Genoese reliefs in Chios, Catalog of the active and ruined churches in Chios), and in his scattered notes, many other valuable elements.
