We study the history of "modern" Hellenism usually starting from the fall of Constantinople (1453). It was the final act in the collapse of what we today refer to as "Byzantine" Hellenism, the end of the "medieval" period, and the beginning of the "modern" times in Greek history.

However, from the perspective of the evolution of Greek culture, the starting point of the "modern" era is not 1453. It is rather 1354: the year when Demetrios Kydones, urged by Emperor John Katakouzinos, translates Thomas Aquinas's "Summa Theologiae" into Greek.

Ecstatic about the new "light" coming "from the West," Kydones takes it upon himself to convey it to his fellow Greeks. This event marks the beginning of a new era for Hellenism, a new historical period. A period where the interest of the Greeks gradually shifts from their own tradition and their own culture to another model and vision of life.
