Due to its high iron content, it is considered a strong shield against colds and has anti-hypertensive, antioxidant, and anti-thrombotic properties. It is rich in flavonoids that protect the circulatory and cardiovascular system and is the most popular Greek herb. It grows wild in most mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of the Mediterranean. In Greece, it can be found in most regions, such as:
- in Pindos
- on Taygetus
- in Samothrace known as Sideritis Athoa (mountain tea or Mount Athos tea or Vlach tea or bettonica)
- on Olympus as a rare species at altitudes above 1000 meters
- in Pelion and Kassandra, known as Sideritis Scardica (mountain tea, herb of the gods)
We drink mountain tea as a hot infusion (we pour boiling water over one or two sprigs and let it steep for 3 to 5 minutes to bring out its aroma and therapeutic substances) or cold (after letting it steep as hot infusion, we wait for it to cool a bit and shake it with ice cubes in a shaker. We serve it plain, with honey, with agave, or maple syrup.)
