The D` volume of the Series History of Greek Literature and its reception during the years of the externally defined civil war (1945-1949) comes to complement the previous C` volume and to complete the picture of the dramatic decade of 1940-1949.

It refers to the period following the withdrawal of the Nazi troops, when successive conflicts with a clear class character occurred, and the fate of the "Desolate Land" was being determined - whether it would fall within or outside the Iron Curtain.

In this vicious cycle, literature continues to produce works influenced, directly or indirectly, by the harsh circumstances, with Athens presenting a false image of a well-ordered state to foreign visitors, who were either gullible or willfully blind.

In the intellectual sphere, the highest price paid by the country in that divisive and vindictive state was the failure to award the Nobel Prize in Literature to Angelos Sikelianos.
