The first volume includes the speeches "On Peace" (346 BC), the "2nd Philippic" (344 BC), "On Alonissos," and "On the Chersonese" (341 BC). All the volumes address the Northern Greek issue, specifically the relations between Athens and Philip, and analyze the most significant events of this period.
The 3rd Philippic has been considered since ancient times as Demosthenes' best political speech and is one of his most beautiful speeches in general. It is characterized by extraordinary simplicity, which stems from the orator's absolute awareness of his objective. All expressions are woven around a central and simple idea: Athens is at war, and the citizens must realize it.
The 4th and final Philippic condenses, and often literally repeats, most points of Demosthenes' political views and serves as the orator's political manifesto, which may not have been delivered but published after revisions by the orator himself of all his previous speeches.
