Description

Description

The "descent" of the Elite Detachment of the 1st Division of the Democratic Army of Greece (DSE) in August - September 1949, to the area of Agrafa, particularly in the region between Karditsa and Karpenisi, constitutes an "episode," among the thousands of small and large "episodes" during the three and a half years of the Civil War and the simultaneous epic of the DSE.

Against the modern army that the Detachment had to face, the only advantage was their deep belief in the justice of the Struggle, from which this indomitable, wonderful Morale derived, characterizing them.

For the Detachment and its mission, I have spoken with several who took part in the Civil War, but not in this Detachment. Some consider it to be a "Mission of Death," others a "Desperate effort," others a "haphazard action," some see it as a mistake of the General Headquarters, while others regard it as a military necessary effort that had to be made.

Personally, I believe that the "military logic" imposed such an action, a diversion of this kind. After all, there has never been a military operation that did not have the element of "unpredictability."

Regarding the Detachment itself and those who composed it, they "won," because the main part of their mission, namely for the Detachment to reach and establish itself in the area of Agrafa, was accomplished.
