The victorious operation of the 8th Division in Epirus for the occupation of Mourganas, codenamed "Taurus", which took place from September 11-19, 1948, has not yet been written by the Army History Directorate. Therefore, some authors who wrote about the army's struggle against the communists, in the chapter that narrated the battle of Mourganas, Operation "Taurus", mention it briefly. Former Minister of National Defense E. Averof, in his book "Fire and Axe", writes in a footnote on page 366:
"Neither in the Memoirs of General Tsakalotos, nor in other accessible sources can one find an explanation for the fall of Mourganas. Whatever is mentioned above comes from people who experienced the details of the battle."
These authors, therefore, because they lacked the necessary information, not only leave significant gaps in the narration, but also, due to the limited information available on this subject, deviate from reality in essential events of this operation.
The purpose of this work is not to revive hatred and revive old wounds that literally destroyed our homeland sixty years ago, nor to provide stimuli for unwanted situations that have already begun to be forgotten. I am deeply aware of the importance of unity, as well as the need to maintain a mild political climate and the unity of our People, which, under today's particularly difficult conditions of the international economic situation, as well as the disruption of the climate in international relations, are now more than ever necessary prerequisites for our survival as a Nation and as a Race. National unity, in a world like today's, is our most effective weapon and we must preserve and develop it, protecting it from partisan competition and political animosity.
