Despite the proliferation of related research in recent years, Greek education and its history remain largely terra incognita. This study aims to fill part of this gap.
Formal education constitutes a complex structure. It is conceptualized as a network consisting of six interdependent elements: the learners, the educators, the space in which the educational process takes place, the educational policy bodies, the pedagogical methods, and the family as a shaping entity and a pressure group for authorities and educators.
The six elements are shaped and articulated within the framework of two periodically competing environments, the national and the international.
