The writing of this book arose from the need to identify the educational role and therapeutic function of music in the field of Special Education, as the future implementation of the New Curriculum in the field of Special Education makes it imperative to readjust various cognitive subjects to the new data.
Although the therapeutic, educational, and cultural value of music is globally recognized, in Greece it remains largely marginalized as there is no specific proposal for the implementation of a curriculum for music education in the field of Special Education.
The approach in this work accepts music as an integral part of artistic expression, while simultaneously addressing it in a broader sense as a unity of sound - movement - language. Correspondingly, the term Music Education is introduced as more functional and responds to both education in music and education through music, where in the latter case the therapeutic dimensions of music are indirectly involved in the educational process.
Through Music Education, both musical and non-musical goals are promoted with the ultimate aim of cognitive, socio-emotional, psychomotor, and aesthetic development of the child with special educational needs.
Alongside the proposed theoretical framework, examples of practical applications that cover almost all categories of special needs outline the principles of a teaching program for music education.
Through a simply presented description of already implemented music education programs and a presentation of the proposed structure for the Greek reality, this monograph is aimed at educators, musicians, psychologists, students studying Pedagogy and Special Education, and anyone else involved in the processes of Special Education.
Primarily, however, it aims to promote and accept music as a means, a tool for every interested party, which can be used at any time and adapted to the needs of the child and the educational process.
