The vineyard for Vourliotis was not just his estate, his livelihood, his existence. It was certainly all of these things, but also something far more important than any of them. A piece truly of his "being," from his soul.
He loved it, longed for it, nurtured it, and took pride in it as if it were his "child." He could go without clothes in a difficult situation, and so could his wife; but the vineyard, without a doubt, would receive his meticulous care.
A big and grand house was not something Vourliotis envied, and that’s why he usually did not pursue it. “A house as big as you can fit and a vineyard as far as you can see,” he would say. However, he always dreamed of a large and well-kept vineyard, maintained with care and passion, with plenty of exceptional grapes.
This exceptional quality of grapes was his pride, just like the cleverness and success of his child. The good vintner, in the truest sense of the word, was a respected figure, well-regarded in Vourla.
