The author and painter Fotis Kontoglou (1895-1965), who is ideologically identified as a defining factor in shaping the '30s generation - essentially unaligned with schools and movements - viewed the theatrical scene with skepticism, although when needed, he served theatre with his heart.
Devoted to his art, the Minor Asian Fotios - cosmopolitan and stateless - created with the central axis of his vision being the establishment of Greek identity, judged by Orthodox spirituality.
The news of a "Byzantine" of the 20th century engaging with Molière in the work "The Tricks of Scapin" leads to a new approach to Kontoglou's personality. The translation of the work was presented in 1938 at a performance of the Royal Theatre, which received a warm reception, and featured a distinguished cast of actors directed by D. Matsoukis.
A key figure for the assignment of the translation was Fotios' friend Kostis Bastiás - the dynamic general director of the National Theatre in 1938. With the publication of the elusive handwritten text, readers and scholars of Kontoglou discover yet another facet of his artistic activity that differentiates him from his well-known literary and visual works, while simultaneously adding another piece to the history of modern Greek theatre.
