A triple homicide is the case that Montalbano has to solve this time - involving a young man who lived beyond his financial means and an elderly couple who spent their lives locked inside their home, until the moment they decided to take a trip to Tindari.
The only fact that seems to connect the young man with the couple is that they lived in the same apartment building. However, Montalbano carries a curse; he knows how to read the ancient signs that still exist in Sicily.
In the investigation to solve the case, he is assisted, apart from his team of collaborators, by an old olive tree with a twisted trunk, Swedish Ingrid, a book by Conrad, and an unrepentant 'Anonymous.'
