In a letter to the actress Marie Prescott, who played Vera in the play "VERA OR THE NIHILISTS," Oscar Wilde explains the motivations that inspired him:
"In this work, I tried to express the titanic cry of the peoples for freedom, which in today's Europe threatens thrones and destabilizes governments from Spain to Russia and from the northern to the southern seas. However, Vera is not a political play, but a work of passion. It does not deal with theories of governance but with people, men and women. Contemporary Nihilistic Russia, with the terror of tyranny and the admiration evoked by its martyrdoms, is simply the fiery and feverish stage upon which the characters of my dream live and love. This is the feeling with which the play was written, and this is the purpose for which it should be presented."
