Two pairs of twins, two merchants, and two servants, trapped in the metaphysical web of similarity, become entangled in one deception after another.
The merchants, faithful to the transactional ethics of a new, rising social class, face the paradoxes of commercial and marital fidelity; the servants, pure embodiments of Shakespeare's comedic genius, forced to endure the linguistic and physical violence of their masters, will counter with the only defensive weapon they possess: eloquence, linguistic imagination, and sparkling wit.
The relief that emanates from the innocent laughter of the two jester servants owes its power to the volume of anxiety it transforms, which is why it ultimately relies on them to celebrate the resolution of deception and “joyfully distinct,” to perform the auspicious exit towards a new kind of equality and solidarity.
Their meeting, joyful and festive in contrast to the rather indifferent attitude of their masters, holds for us the power of liberation: “Like two brothers we came into this great world, And hand in hand we leave, no one in front of the other.”
