Description

The concept of gender, sometimes as a physical classification of species and sometimes as a linguistic (grammatical) category, has been and remains a popular target for many researchers in the humanities, mainly psychology, sociology, anthropology, linguistics, etc.
In this volume, the gender of Greek language names is the main focus of seven linguistic studies, which explore aspects of it from a grammatical and psycholinguistic perspective, according to the dominant problematic and theoretical principles formulated internationally in recent years. The topics examined are both synchronic and diachronic. The regularity and the possibility of alternative rendering of the gender of names (rendering criteria, natural and grammatical gender, variety), the role of gender in agreement of sentence terms, the diachronic evidence of trends in gender change, the relationship between gender and declension, the perception and acquisition of Greek gender (as a mother tongue or as a second/foreign language), its cognitive evaluation, are all issues that are systematically addressed for the first time and in correlation with each other in a way that highlights the interplay and complexity of linguistic phenomena while justifying the great interest of specialists and non-specialists in gender from a descriptive, interpretive, and pedagogical perspective.
