Description

The Ultrastar DC HC300 series offers drives that are cost-effective to acquire but provide fast and reliable access to data for traditional data center applications.

Affordability and Access Speed: Key Requirements for Low-Capacity SATA Hard Drives in the Data Center

As the industry evolves to develop purpose-built solutions for the growing demands of data storage, IT managers continue to rely on lower-capacity drives that are economical to acquire but provide fast and reliable access to data for traditional data center applications. The Ultrastar DC HC320 is an 8TB1 hard drive designed to handle workloads of up to 550TB per year and helps address the economic and access requirements of many traditional IT workloads. Lower-capacity drives also help address architectural limitations. As part of the mid-capacity DC HC300 series, the Ultrastar DC HC320 is designed for traditional storage and server applications, as well as for distributed and scalable computing, including block and file storage architectures, providing fast 7,200 RPM performance and lower acquisition costs to ease budget constraints.

Technological innovation offers efficiency and performance for traditional systems

The Ultrastar DC HC320 is based on a proven 5-disk air platform design that uses conventional magnetic recording (CMR) technology in a large 3.5-inch form factor. Compared to the previous generation, the Ultrastar 7K6000, the DC HC320 offers 33% greater capacity, up to 12% performance increase, and uses slightly larger diameter media. It features a second-generation, dual-stage micro actuator to enhance head positioning accuracy for better drive performance. The write performance boost is also supported by Western Digital's media cache architecture, a disk-based caching technology that provides a large cache area on the disk, which also improves data reliability and integrity during unexpected power loss. Finally, the addition of non-volatile flash cache (NVC) in both SATA and SAS models helps improve write performance. The Ultrastar DC HC320 also includes a Rebuild Assist feature, which helps drastically reduce RAID rebuild times and maintain system performance during the rebuild process.

It was purchased and used in Synology NAS. For those who remember and know, it is the Hitachi Ultrastar series which was the number one choice for HDD disks in data centers, their reliability far surpassing the others of similar capabilities.

They have been working in RAID 1 24/7 for almost a year without any noticeable issues so far, I will update with an edit if any problems arise.

PS: Not recommended for desktop use as there is a noticeable clicking noise at 1-2 meters.

Fast disk but very noisy, the Red ones I have in the system are not heard at all (the case has soundproofing and the disks are in shock-resistant cases) while this one is heard loudly even when it is just idle. When tested with Hitachi's WinDFT, it is heard so loudly that it scares you...
