I proceeded to write a short, comprehensible manual on excavation techniques to emphasize the need for a unified system of documenting excavation data in our country, a uniform way of keeping diary notes by all excavators in Greece, which is easy to use, effective, and amenable to computerization.
The removal of layers during excavation is permitted and justified only if care is taken for a complete on-site documentation of the position of movable finds in the successive layers (in extent and depth), the composition of each layer, its content, its dating based on pottery and coins, as well as the factors of its creation, whether due to natural or anthropogenic causes.
The Ministry of Culture has an obligation to train its new staff, provide them with the necessary tools for an excavation, and support them with personnel from other fields, so that the excavation process is methodically completed every day, from the uncovering to the cleaning and sorting of pottery fragments, photographing, drawing, final recording, and classification of all finds.
In the process of uncovering the material remnants of the human past, in what we call excavation, archaeology applies the method of the positive sciences and cannot proceed without the contribution of both these sciences and the science of conservation, as well as the historical sciences.
