Licorice is believed to have expectorant, soothing, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and laxative properties.
It is believed to also have an effect on the adrenal glands. It has been used for various conditions such as bronchial congestion, bronchitis, chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, colic, and primary adrenocortical insufficiency. The herb has a notable effect on the endocrine system. The glycosides it contains have a similar structure to the natural steroids found in the body. This explains the beneficial action of licorice in adrenal gland problems such as Addison's disease.
These glycosides also inhibit the production of cortisol in the body, the hormone released into the blood when we are stressed. In this way, the plant has a positive effect on stress-related problems. The herb is beneficial for gastritis and peptic ulcers. It has a positive effect on congestion, bronchitis, and cough. In arthritis problems where corticosteroid preparations are taken, it helps improve adrenal gland function.
Licorice is combined with Vixium or Marubium for bronchial conditions. For gastric problems, it is combined with Althea, Symphytum, and Spirea. It is prepared as an infusion.
Usage: We add half to one teaspoon of the root to a cup of water and simmer it for 10-15 minutes. We strain and drink it three times a day.
