The Pioneer A-40AE integrated amplifier is a stereo model featuring Direct Energy design and a Wolfson 192 kHz/24-bit D/A converter. Direct Function bypasses the processing circuits, except for the volume control, while Power Amp Direct allows it to be used as a power amplifier. The power supply windings for the power amplifier, preamplifier and controls are separated to prevent mutual noise interference.

It features phono, optical, coaxial and analog inputs, as well as a headphone output. The speaker terminals support A or B connection, bi-wiring and simultaneous A+B operation. The chassis is made of rigid steel, while the Anti-Standing Wave insulators have a special shape with no parallel internal sides to limit resonance.
