Description

Description

This volume, titled Sculpture and Society in Roman Greece: Artistic Products, Social Projections, includes the thirty presentations of Greek and foreign speakers from the second related conference that took place in Rethymno in September 2014, under the auspices of the University of Crete.

The first conference on the topic Classical Tradition and Modern Elements in the Plastic Art of Roman Greece was organized in Thessaloniki in 2009. The publication received a positive reception and demonstrated the necessity for a systematic engagement with the sculpture of this specific period. The ever-increasing importance of Roman Greece is evident from the number of doctoral dissertations, conferences, and publications that have emerged in recent years.

The thematic axis of the presentations included in the volume primarily concerns the relationship between sculpture and society, as well as workshop activities in Roman Greece. The studies follow a geographical classification (Athens, Attica, Thessaly, Macedonia, Epirus, Crete, Asia Minor), while at the end, there are studies of a general and hypertonic nature. Their internal classification is based on the type of sculptures. Some of the titles of the presentations include Funerary Reliefs with "Bustes" from Thessaloniki and its Area, The Sculpture of Ancient Orestis in Roman Times, Relief of the God Theodaimon.
