The dominant, Greek-centered school of analysis and interpretation of the "national" past in Greece has either ignored or shaped - that is, distorted - objective reality.
It consciously chose, from the very first years of the formation of the Greek state, to adapt this past to historicist interpretative frameworks that produce legitimizing, easily digestible, and reassuring translations and versions of it in the present.
However, the misleading idealization of individuals, institutions, and events may perhaps create broad agreements, but at the same time constructs collective fears, intolerance, crises, ruptures, and deadlocks, as well as introspective perceptions that sometimes lead to tragedies.
This study aims, with the assistance of the necessary primary and secondary material, to arrive at calm interpretations that may, of course, not flatter national collective fantasies, taboos, and familiar legitimizing myths, but seek the predominance of "a morality of reason and the powers of logic."
