The action of mallow flower is gentle, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant. It is used for inflammation of the oral cavity, recovery from gastritis and stomach ulcers, as well as for problems of the upper respiratory system. Externally, it can be used in bath water or as a compress for abscesses and minor burns.
The composition of mallow includes vitamins A, B, C, E, inulin, phenols, flavonoids, essential fatty acids, as well as minerals such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium, and potassium. Due to its high mucilage content, mallow is particularly soothing for inflammation of the urinary, digestive, and respiratory systems. Mallow leaves also provide useful amounts of iron and are rich in zinc and vitamins.
Mallow is edible and can be used in cooking as a substitute for spinach in dishes such as soups, salads, and pies. The mucilage of mallow helps thicken soup. In Jewish culture, it is considered an important plant and during the 1948 war, it was a critical crop. Common mallow can replace Corchorus olitorius in the preparation of the traditional dish "Molokhia," which is usually served with chicken.
In China, mallow roots are used to prepare rich soups and broths. Its seed pods can replace egg whites in the making of meringue.
