Evaluating students' performance constitutes an educational and, therefore, a social process that plays an organic role in the school's social function. Although assessment is narrowed and specified in the pedagogical practice of grading, it still reflects, continues, summarizes, and synthesizes the function of the educational system.
In this axis, the relationships that children develop with school knowledge are dynamically articulated, and through comparison-conflict among themselves, students compete for the attainment of differentiated positions. This way, grading classifications and hierarchies are produced and reproduced, on the basis of which the well-known professional groups are later formed, dynamically shaped by the social division of labor, organizing the various social classes.
The analytical stance of educators towards assessment allows them to inscribe their educational work within a socially transformative perspective of Success Pedagogy, to explore the social dynamics, and to work towards preventing and overcoming the reproductive processes that the new Greek school carries out.
