Summary The knowledge of the topics related to the key areas of child development and adaptation is an important prerequisite for the proper support of children by school psychologists and all other significant adults in children's lives.
The purpose of this book is to connect theory and practical application, presenting modern theoretical approaches to key issues in school psychology, exemplary prevention and intervention programs, as well as counseling support guidelines based on current developments. The main orientation is to enhance the positive aspects of individuals and systems with the aim of promoting protective factors while simultaneously reducing risk factors for children's development.
Additionally, emphasis is placed on highlighting good practices and implementing interventions that promote social equality and holistically address the needs of members of the school system.
In particular, modern trends in the provision of school psychological services are briefly described, the importance of school-family connectivity, and the key areas of self-development such as social and emotional development, moral development, relationships with peers, and sexual development.
Special attention is given to behavior and boundary-setting issues and school bullying. Basic concepts related to mental resilience are also described, while practical application guidelines for educators and parents are provided.
Topics related to the adaptation and support of various groups of students (e.g., students with chronic illness, students who have experienced loss, students from families facing divorce or adoption, etc.) are also presented, aiming for the positive development and school adaptation of all students.
Finally, examples of educational actions, prevention, and interventions from the Research and Application Center for School Psychology at the University of Athens are presented. A special feature of the book is the provision of theoretical knowledge and counseling, as well as practical application guidelines and counseling, thus serving as an important resource for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as for school psychologists, mental health professionals, educators, and parents.
