A dissident Russian poet is found dead after what appears to be a botched robbery on the street. However, the deeper Rebus and his colleague, Detective Sergeant Siobhan Clarke, dig, the more they are inclined to believe they’re dealing with not a random attack - especially as a second gruesome murder follows.

Meanwhile, a brutal and premeditated attack against the local gangster and sworn enemy of Rebus draws suspicion towards him. Has the inspector overstepped himself in order to settle their loose ends?
