Greek literature has a history spanning many centuries. The primary aim of this Anthology is to capture within its pages a small part of this literary production, specifically that which is written in the so-called formal Greek language, and more specifically a subgenre of it, prose, the texts of the spoken word.
By exploring the surviving works, starting from the classical period, the time of the peak of ancient Greek thought (5th century BC), and continuing uninterrupted until the fall of the Byzantine Empire (15th century AD), an effort has been made to include samples of prose production spanning twenty whole centuries.
Excerpts from many of the most famous authors have been included, who could not possibly be omitted from this collection, as well as from others who are less known or unknown to the general public, but whose work offers something unique.
The selection has been made in such a way that it covers various types of texts, such as historical, rhetorical, philosophical, theological, travel writings, letters, and chronicles.
