During the anti-government protests of 2017, in which the opposition often escalated tensions, more than one hundred and fifty people were killed, mainly by military and paramilitary forces.

Journalist Jason Pipinis traveled to Venezuela twice, where he met with President Nicolás Maduro as well as opposition leaders, while documenting the severe shortages of food and medicines. In addition, he spoke with several so-called political prisoners.
